Our department is one of the largest and busiest in the
country and has an excellent reputation internationally. Indeed, many
patients come from all over the world to be treated by our doctors. In
general, UK patients are seen at the request of their General Practitioner,
except in exceptional circumstances.
We currently have seven consultants who undertake clinical practice in
adult patients, plus two who specialise in paediatric patients. For adult
patients, NHS clinics are run on Monday afternoons and Tuesday mornings.
In addition, certain of the consultants also undertake private clinical
work within the hospital. These paying patients are seen in addition to
a busy NHS practice.
The income generated is paid partly to the hospital to cover the clinical
care but the remainder (doctors' fees etc) is paid into the Department's
research fund. This is used to fund research projects and research staff.
Such research maintains our position as one of the leading endocrine departments
in the world. No doctor receives any personal payments directly from this
fund.
