Clinical Services

The Endocrinology service at St Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospitals has a national and international reputation as a leading centre in both clinical and basic endocrine research, and is renowned for its record in all areas of clinical and experimental endocrinology. It currently offers an in-patient and out-patient service which is amongst the largest in the world, and all clinical facilities necessary for every type of endocrine problem. Close liaison between paediatric and adult physicians in endocrinology ensures a seamless service of high quality for young patients.
The range of services available includes the following:

  • Secondary and tertiary referral service for all the specialist management of pituitary and hypothalamic diseases in children and adults, particularly pituitary tumours, prolactinomas, acromegaly and Cushing's syndrome.

  • Investigation and management of all aspects of endocrine disorders including: thyroid, pituitary, adrenocortical and adrenomedullary disorders; growth disorders; disorders of sexual development and function; reproductive gynaecology and andrology; bone densitometry; disorders of calcium and bone metabolism; neuroendocrine tumours especially carcinoids.

  • Day/week investigation on dedicated acute investigation units.

  • A complete and comprehensive back-up service available to all patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for consultation with specialist endocrinologist (senior registrar or consultant level).

Specialist Investigations

  • A full range of biochemical investigative assays including assays for all major peptides and steroid hormones, and HPLC/electrochemical detection for plasma and urinary catecholamines.

  • Helical whole body and brain CT scanning, 1.5T MRI, dual emission x-ray absorptiometry for bone density assessment, and venous catheterisation for localisation of hormone secretion.

  • A fully equipped department of nuclear medicine carrying out radioisotope studies into all major endocrine glands.

  • On-site availability of external beam radiotherapy by linear accelerators with customised computer simulation, transcranial/transsphenoidal neurosurgery for pituitary and hypothalamic tumours, focussed radiotherapy (radiosurgery).
