Health and wellbeing in east London - Inaugural lecture Ian Basnett - Podcast

Professor Ian BasnettThis lecture discusses some of the principles and practice of public health taking at times a light perspective. Ian Basnett considers health and public health in east London including a historical perspective.

He argues using examples that collaborative work between public health, primary care, academics and local authorities can make significant in roads to some of the deep seated health inequalities we face.

He reflects on where we can impact most on improving health and reducing health inequalities, including the role of the NHS and the broader determinants of health.

Using examples Ian discusses ways of doing this and reflect on some examples of applied research and improvement. These will focus on examples such as the outcomes from cancer treatment and the implications for the organisation of services and inequalities in access to revascularisation and addressing those, together with work in east London addressing the determinants of health, such as the availability of fast food outlets.

He discusses the prospects for further developing service and academics links in public health and primary care. Finally Ian will talk about some of the individuals whose support he has received and their contributions to research and public health.

This lecture took place on the 22 February 2011.
