Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a department of Barts and The London NHS Trust, which includes The Royal London Hospital and St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and provides a comprehensive service in the specialty for a large area of the North East sector of Greater London. It is a leading part of the Head & Neck Clinical Group. All aspects of maxillofacial surgery are undertaken including the treatment of facial trauma, deformity, malignant disease of the mouth and jaws, diseases of the salivary glands and the temporomandibular joints.
Emergency clinics are undertaken where undergraduate teaching and the initial treatment of oral and dental problems is provided in association with the other specialised departments of the Dental Institute.
St. Bartholomew's Hospital
Diagnostic treatment clinics for referred patients are conducted daily. Minor oral surgery is carried out under local and general anaesthesia. Day stay surgery under general anaesthesia is undertaken everyday in addition to Day Case lists at Smithfield.
The department has an allocation of 14 beds and 9 regular operating sessions for the treatment of the most major problems. Training experience is enhanced by weekly operating opportunities at Homerton, Harlow and Whipps Cross.
The Royal London Hospital
There is close and frequent contact with all the other general and specialist service departments of the Royal London Hospital, in particular the neurosurgical firms. In addition the department has links with the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery unit at St. Margaret's Hospital, as well as Homerton and Whipps Cross hospitals.
