BLBC Social Events

Here's what we've been up to off the water this year.

UH Boat Club Dinner, Sat 6th March 1999

A most excellent night was had at the United Hospitals' Boat Club Dinner, held at the Whitbread Brewery just down the road from Bart's and Charterhouse Square. It is unfortunate that many of the club could not make it due to the pressure of exams.

It would be a shame if this event failed to become an annual event - a useful opportunity to scope the opposition before the Bumps build up begins.

Henley Tour, Fri 27th November - Sun, 29th November1998

A generally excellent weekend. Allowing the boys and girls a chance toget to know one another with games around the tables of local hostelries.Henley is a most inviting town and we took advantage of its hospitalityto the full. About 50 people attended and the weekend provided an opportunityfor crews to gel and bond both on and off the water. The Sat night sawus descend en masse on one of Henley's few Curry Houses - I'm not surethey quite knew what had hit them as Spanner collapsed in a heap at oneend of the table.

The stretch of water at Henley is ideal for beginners as coaching canbe provided for almost the whole of the navigable stretch. It was goodto see Dr Mitchell and Prof Hudson down at the riverside on the Sundayand we hope that more VPs will be able to join us on future tours.

Accomodation was provided in local B & B and entertainment was providedby Sage and Onion!

Pictures to follow - lawsuits allowing!

Boat Club Curry, Wed, 7th October 1998

There is nothing like an afternoon of rowing to build up a healthy appatiteand nothing like a good curry to fill the hunger gap. So, as has now becomea favourite activity of the Boat Club we settled down for an evening ofsamosas and nan bread. The evening was held in the Mixed Common Room ofthe Clubs Union Building, and the food was brought in by Dhaka Byriani. The evening was a change from going out and the usual problems that follow, and was generally accepted as a success. Several members of the Women'sHockey Club were in attendance and when things had quietened down severalmembers of the Rugby Club picked through the remains. Thanks must go toStuart Harrison for organising the event and to everyone who helped shifttables about and we hope to be able to hold a similar function in the MCRsoon.

Fresher's BBQ, Sun, 27th September 1998

Once again the BBQ was shown to be a worthwhile event, attracting about45 Freshers down to the Lea for the annual tub racing. For many of theFreshers it was their first time in a boat and we hope that they will makethe effort to come again. The tub racing pitted some good crews againstsome not so good crews and the day was eventually won by Old Man Brown'syoung crew, who convincingly beat Young Girl Shelly's older crew. Funnelswere presented to the winners on the bank after the races. Burgers andSausages were devoured eagerly, thanks to Julia for running the excellentBBQ.
The VPs were represented by Dr Libby who took it upon himself to bothcox and row during the day, unfortunately his crew were dismissed fromthe competition early on. Many thanks to all who came and especially thosesenior members who helped with the smooth running of the day.

Fresher's Fayre, Wed, 23rd September 1998

This event proved to be a great success with lots of Freshers signing upfor the boat club and many taking part in our ergo challenge for a freebeer. Many Freshers seemed to have already had some experience rowing andso we hope that they keep that up and don't convert to rugby or the like.Information regarding the Boat Club BBQ was passed around and it lookslike there should be a good turn out for that on Sunday 27th.
