Barts and The London Scholarship

The Medical College of St Bartholomew’s Hospital Trust (“the Trust”) is a registered charity.  Its sole beneficiary is Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry within QMUL.  Its sole charitable purpose is to promote all aspects of medical and dental education and research at the School.  The Trust owns the land and buildings at Charterhouse Square, which it leases to QMUL for the use of the School at a peppercorn rent.

The Trust supports the School in a number of other ways.  It has recently assisted various strategic developments, such as professorial posts, and the major capital project required to build and fit out the new William Harvey Heart Centre.  The Trust assists students through (1) contributions to hardship and welfare funds, (2) contributions to outreach work in the community and (3) scholarships for undergraduates and research studentships for postgraduates.

In response to representations from the School about the need to enable able students from any background to take up a place, the Trust will now award from time to time an additional scholarship for the benefit of an outstanding local student from a low income household to enable them to do so.  The Barts and The London Scholarship will be worth £15,000 a year for up to six years at a time.  The award will be based on family circumstances, examination performance, interview and the UK Clinical Aptitude Test taken before university entrance, where the successful student gains grades above the standard entry requirement.

The first award of the Scholarship will be made in 2012 for years of study 2012-13/2017-18.  A second award will be made in 2014 to a student from The Drapers’ Academy, London Borough of Havering, if there is an eligible candidate.  Thereafter awards will be made at the discretion of the Trustees taking account inter alia of the availability of funds.

Who is the Scholarship for?

The Scholarship will be awarded to the student who:

• achieves above the standard requirements for entry to Barts and The London School of Medicine: A-level grades AAA plus a fourth subject offered at AS level at grade B, subjects to include Biology and Chemistry

• has the highest score in the UK Clinical Aptitude Test of those applying for the scholarship

• attends school or sixth form college within the North  and East London boroughs of Enfield, Haringey, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Newham; Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham and Havering

• is from a household with a combined income of less than £25,000.

The candidate with the highest combined UKCAT and interview score, whose predicted grades meet the School's entry requirements will be selected for nomination for the Scholarship.
