The Barts and The London Medical School – Malta

Our state-of-the-art, purpose-built medical school will be on the Gozo campus next to Gozo General Hospital in Victoria. While the main Barts building is being completed teaching will take place at the Sir Michelangelo Refalo Sixth Form College in the main town of Victoria.

Once completed, our medical school will be the hub for all your classroom-based teaching and your practical skills sessions. It will also house a lecture theatre, seminar rooms, clinical and communications skills labs, library/IT suites and space for private study with the latest learning support technology.

With reference to completion, we are working to the latest dates provided by our building contractor and we expect to have access to the new Anatomy Centre in September 2018. The current expectation for the completion of the new Medical School Building is March 2019 and we expect to take occupation of the building shortly thereafter.

Anatomy Centre

A new Anatomy Centre next to Gozo General Hospital in Malta is scheduled to be completed this September. With a bespoke modern design, the building will be equipped with the most up-to-date facilities to support anatomy and clinical skills teaching.

The unique facility will be a focus of teaching activity at Barts and The London's Malta campus from September 2018, in time for Year 2 medical students to continue their anatomy studies and for the new intake of Year 1 students.  The building will also provide office accommodation for academic, technical and administrative staff.

A central feature of the building is its anatomy lab where students will undertake practicals and tutors will lead demonstrations using anatomical specimens and models. The lab will include a dedicated area for learning anatomy through dissection and will be equipped with facilities for showing clinical images, videos of surgical procedures and specialised computer imaging.

The building also has a central courtyard, which will provide an outdoor space for students and staff.

Clinical and Communications Skills Centre

We will also have an exceptional Clinical and Communications Skills Centre, designed by the GMC-commended Barts London Team, to allow you to practise clinical methods and practical skills using patient simulators, models, video recordings and mock ward settings.

Your communications skills will be developed in our interview room suite, using video recording and trained actors to role-play clinical scenarios and provide valuable feedback. We plan to make the centre available for self-directed learning outside teaching hours and for exam refresher practicals.

Library

You will have access to a collection of basic medical texts in the School Library as well as 24hr remote log-in access to a large selection of online resources, including picture libraries, books, journals and articles. The Library has excellent computer facilities, as well as individual private study and group study spaces.

Computing facilities

Every student will have an email account and access to the web, as well as a fast wi-fi service. Queen Mary University of London‘s intranet (QM+) will provide you with an extensive medical knowledge base, which includes key lecture notes, papers and research. Our intranet will also be our main administrative channel of communication (for example, distributing timetables, study plans and exam results, as well as learning materials).
